In order to cultivate and sustain a growing community of leaders that will immensely contribute in eradicating education injustice, TFSL will deploy a two-pronged approach – short term and long term.

Short Term

Through our 2 year Fellowship Programme, in which the most dynamic, promising graduates and young professionals are given the opportunity to serve as full-time teacher leaders in pre-primary, primary, Junior Secondary, and Senior Secondary Schools in disadvantaged communities. Through their experiences, both in and outside the classrooms, they will cultivate the skills, knowledge and mindsets required to attain leadership positions in their future endeavours.

Addressing the shortage of teaching and learning materials in schools in Sierra Leone by developing and deploying a low cost app known as “Edulife”, that will give teachers and students access to data-driven solutions to improve learning outcomes in literacy, numeracy, Science, and Life skills for participating pupils.

TFSL will prioritise women in order to bridge the gap – with a 50/50 gender split. Priority will also be given to Literacy, Numeracy, Science, and Life Skills to promote innovation in schools. In order not to perpetuate the cycle of disadvantage in which the affluent get the best education and best opportunities, graduates from high-need rural communities will be encouraged to participate in this fellowship, as we believe that the most marginalised communities need to be leaders of their own change/liberation.

TFSL will work with others to recognise, reward and celebrate exceptional teacher leaders on an annual basis, in order to improve the stature of teachers and restore the dignity of the teaching profession in Sierra Leone. We have been doing this since 2013, and have established international linkages to provide opportunities for our teachers to compete for the global teacher prize.

Long Term

Engaging and supporting TFSL alumni, and the growing communities, to become change advocates in their diverse ecosystems with a shared purpose of building a life-long movement for a truly liberatory systemic change in the education sector so that all children would achieve their full potential. A central component of our long-term theory of change is the role played by alumni in changing national attitudes, priorities and structures to expand educational opportunity for children. Therefore, we will prioritise recruitment efforts, at least initially, towards groups that we assume are more likely to feel they have a personal stake in the future of the country.

The fellowship will not be open to non-Sierra Leoneans. However, recognising that ultimately demographic designations are constructed and not necessarily reflective of a more complex reality in a globalised world, we commit to revisit these priorities over time, and make changes warranted by data and further research.
